The United States is a republic consisting of twelve states, twelve special zones, and one federal district. Its inhabited territory stretches almost across the width of North America. The United States has a notably stable government. Despite existing for almost four centuries, there has only been a single suspension of democracy and one civil war. The United States is also a preeminent military power, maintaining a fleet of drones, submarines, and an army. It is also a pioneer in the fields of nanotics and bioengineering. Today it has an estimated five million citizens, making it the most populous nation in the western hemisphere and the fourth most populous worldwide.
